How I Got My Start

The Computer LadyIt is such a long and winding story to explain how I got my start. Mainly because I have done so many things in my life and each one has had it's own start and finish.

At 17 I found myself pregnant and clueless. I married and then began to raise children. I didn't really want to be a Mom and wife but that is where I found myself. I am still married to the same guy (and we still like each other) almost 29 years later. It was meant to be.

While I was a stay-at-home Mom I taught myself many things like sewing, quilting, crafts, and eventually computer skills like DOS, Windows, HTML, web design, Internet, and lots more. I love learning new things and quickly become engrossed in whatever "hot new thing" comes my way. Right now it is learning about and teaching blogging.

My first job outside of the home was that of a quilting instructor for senior citizens at a local senior center. That lead to working with staff at the center to open the first Computer Learning Center in Connecticut for seniors. This program was through SeniorNet (www.seniornet.org) and our sponsor was SNET at the time. From there I went on to setting up a computer consulting business.

When I was staying home with my kids there were no computers and no Internet. Once my children got a bit older computers starting coming out and I found the Internet through Compuserve and then AOL. That was when the Internet was very young and we got online with a 300 baud modem (can you imagine?). There were no flashy colors, games to play, ways to search for other sites, or advertisements to view. That was back in 1993 and I have been online and learning new things ever since. From my experience the Internet sees has major changes take place every 6 months so there is always something new to learn.

In 1993, seems like a popular year, I won my first prize online. It was Microsoft Works and I won it from AOL. That was the first piece of software that I learned that helped me start my computer consulting business.

Since 1994 I have been consulting people in computer software, instructions, and troubleshooting as well as web design and now blogging. My philosophy is that each thing you do in life is a stepping stone for the next thing you do. You need to learn from what you are doing now and then can apply it to the next job, project, or adventure. Pretty soon you have a full arsenal of skills to use.

Your success story is inspiring to all of us. I've been using computers a long time, but just started blogging about my interests recently and hope to gain some readers like you.
